Day Care Camp for Children with Disabilities

Graham Bell Centre for the deaf has organized quarterly Day Care Camp for children with disabilities in Pandua, Polba-Dadpur, Balagarh, and Dhaniakhali Block. The camp was held for 3 days, and each day was dedicated to children with a specific type of disability. This camp was held from 2nd September to 4th September’2025.

On first day was dedicated for children with Intellectual Disability at Pandua, Cerebral palsy, Locomotor Disability & Multiple Disability at Polba-Dadpur, Hearing Impairment (HI) at Balagarh and Dhaniakhali also. The second day was concentrated for children with Cerebral palsy, Locomotor Disability & Multiple Disability at Pandua and Dhaniakhali, Hearing Impairment at Polba-Dadpur and Intellectual Disability at Balagarh block. And the last day was dedicated for children with Hearing Impairment at Pandua, Cerebral palsy Locomotor Disability & Multiple Disability at Balagarh and Intellectual Disability at Polba-Dadpur & Dhaniakhali block.

The objective of this camp was to provide skill transfer to the parents of children with disabilities, enabling them to quality support their children at home. In this camp, we have focused on “all about Monsoon season. To ensure effective communication and learning, real objects and materials were used which are easily available in their surroundings. We have also covered Activities of Daily Living (ADL) for children with Intellectual disability and physical development activities for children with cerebral Palsy. In this camp, parents were participated actively and contributed their ideas on disability management. Total 235 CwDs and their parents have participated in the Day Care Programme.

For children with cerebral palsy, Locomotor Disability & Multiple Disability:

 In this camp we have introduced the children to the Monsoon season and explained concepts related to nature, vegetables, fruits, flowers, common diseases, and festivals of the season through videos and interactive conversations. For physical development of CwDs we have provided gait training, throwing the ball, for better hand functioning and eye- hand coordination we have used shape board peg board as well as worked on fine motor gross motor developmental activities. For children with swallowing difficulties, we have arranged enjoyable activities such as flying bubbles and blowing whistles. We also provided training in Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), including bathing, dressing, combing, and eating, to promote independence in personal care.  Along with ADL training we have introduced recognition of coins and currency notes with their values. After lunch, the CwDs took part in various recreational activities such as passing the ball, flying balloons, hitting the wicket and spoon and marble game.

For Children with Intellectual Disability & Autism Spectrum Disorder:

During this camp, we introduced children to the concepts of nature, fruits, flowers, vegetables, and diseases using real objects and LTMs. We have also given concept to the children on festivals (Janmastami & Rakhi Bandhan) and importance days (Independence Day & Teachers Day) of Monsoon season. CwDs participated in activities such as crawling through the tunnel, pulling weights, arranging cups, and matching shapes and colors using Learning Teaching Materials (LTMs) to improve their attention and concentration. Along with concentration development, the CwDs have received training on Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). A role play was organized to teach them how to prepare themselves before going to school. In addition, adolescents with ID were trained on ADLs, learned about good touch and bad touch, and provided with essential awareness on Sexual and Reproductive Health issues. After lunch, all children have participated in recreational activities such as making the Indian flag with paper, ball-throwing into boxes, and flying balloons, which were designed to promote motor skills, socialization, and enjoyment in a playful environment.

For children with Hearing Impairment:

In this camp, we have introduced children with hearing impairment to the concept of the Monsoon season, covering related fruits, flowers, vegetables, common diseases, festivals, and important days using real objects and chart papers which help them to language development and improve communication skill.  We also celebrated Teachers’ Day with CwDs by offering flowers to the picture of Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan. In addition, a health awareness session was held where children learned about snake bites and mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria etc.  The causes, symptoms, preventive measures, and primary treatment options were explained using video and LTMs. Following the health awareness session, we have organized an educational session where children learned addition, subtraction, the Indian number system, simple geometry, and sentence-making related to the Monsoon season. In the Dhaniakhali block, children were introduced to the names, tastes, and characteristics of various spices commonly used in daily cooking. After lunch, we prepared delicious dishes made from plums, helping the children understand the different tastes of plum-based foods. Children with hearing impairment also took part in handicraft activities, such as making the Indian Flag with paper.

At the end of each day, in every block, we have collected feedback & learning from parents which help us to understand their level of understanding.
